logoBlood Alarm System

Summary: A digital platform(web and mobile app) that minimizes avoidable delays in blood transfusions in health facilities resulting from using unreliable methods of monitoring blood stock levels and inappropriate use of blood by health workers in health facilities.

Problem: Despite an increase in Uganda's blood collection capacity, delays in blood transfusions are still common and responsible for about a 1/4 of maternal deaths due to PPH, Mortality of up to 52% in children with severe malarial anemia (incase of just an 8hr delay) and A significant proportion of acute trauma deaths due to hemorrhage. Most of these delays are avoidable and result from: (1) Unneccessary transfusions with transfusions to 55.5% to anemic children who receive 50% of blood collected in Uganda are inappropriate and (2) Unreliable methods of monitoring blood inventory in health facilities and untimely blood order processes.

Milestone
With funding through Uganda UK Health Alliance(UUKHA) from the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation (ICCBBA), the project was piloted in Mukono General Hospital and Kisenyi Health Center IV in Uganda. Over 400 transfusions completed via the system, increased the traceability of blood products from 68% to 72%, the compliance to blood transfusion guidelines increased from 54% t0 78%, improved availability of critical blood products for emergency cases and had a satisfactory rating of 3.9/5 above average for digital health platforms. Over 70 downloads on both android and iOS.
Next step/Status
Refinement and integration with EHRs and electronic blood bank management system in the country.

logoSafe Mama App

Summary: A native mobile app aimed at bringing the latest maternal and newborn care guidelines, well curated skills videos and pre-recorded webinars to rontline health workers other than relying on the traditional and costly printed guidelines.

Problem: Uganda's maternal and neonatal mortality rates remain alarmingly high. Research indicates that these figures can be significantly reduced by equipping frontline health workers with the latest information on managing maternal and newborn health conditions. Despite the Ministry of Health's efforts to disseminate this critical information, frontline health workers still face challenges in accessing the most up-to-date content.

Milestone
Over 800 downloads on both android and iOS. Launched at the 4th safe motherhood conference at speke resort Munyonyo, Kampala, Uganda.
Next step/Status
The project was handed over to the National Safe Motherhood Expert Committee (NASMEC) IT team.
